The internal surface of the cranial base, divided into anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossae, with the foramina for nerves and vessels.

The anterior cranial fossa supports the frontal lobes and contains the cribriform plate of the ethmoid; the middle fossa holds the temporal lobes and the sella turcica with the pituitary gland; the posterior fossa contains the cerebellum and brainstem. The main openings include the optic canal, superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, jugular foramen and foramen magnum.
